THE ABACA CARPET (MORE FAQS)

Before you consider buying an Abaca Carpet, we thought you should know some Abaca Trivia:

  • ABACA or Manila hemp (Musa textilis) is actually a species of banana
  • ABACA hand woven carpet and rugs are a luxury item. The hand-made version takes long hours to make and is a labor of love. When done right, a weaver can do 7 to 8 sqft a day at its fastest, but if the weaver is just starting out, he is lucky to get at least 4sqft a day. Twine used in making our abaca is also hand-made (no electronic machines here!) that's why it also takes a couple of days to make just to produce a single bundle.
  •  ABACA production in the Philippines is increasing: From January to November 2014, abaca fiber production was recorded at 427,700 tons, increasing from 354,490 tons in the previous period.
  • ABACA in the world market- the Philippines by 85% to 95% of the world's supply.
  • ABACA is the strongest natural fibre (Woods and Roberts 2015 pg 301)
  •  ABACA fibre is perfect for making carpets and rugs becasue of its strength and the long length that it has (6-12ft after tuxying, sheathing and drying- Considine 1983 pg.1)
